Few little facts about Highgate

Highgate is a village in North London on the north eastern corner of Hampstead Heath. It is situated between 3 London boroughs, Haringey, Camden and Islington. It is one of the more expensive suburbs to live in and has an active conservative society called The Highgate Society which aims to protect its character. Highgate is noteworthy for its Cemetery and Georgian architecture. It is also the location of Berthold Lubetkin's two highpoint apartment buildings. Historically it adjoined the Bishop of London's hunting estate.

In 1817, the poet, aesthetic philosopher and critic Samuel Taylor Coleridge came to live in Highgate home of Dr Gillman in order to rehab from his desperate opium addiction. Cole ridge lived there for the rest of his life becoming known as the Sage of Highgate, while here some of his most famous poems (though written years earlier) were first published including "Kublai Khan". His literary autobiography, Biographical Literati, appeared in 1817. His home became a place of pilgrimage for figures such as Carlyle and Emerson. He died there on 25th July 1834 and is buried in crypt of St Micheal's Church.
